Mayors Against Illegal Guns.”

As you know, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is heading a national cabal of anti-gun mayors called “Mayors Against Illegal Guns.”

Law enforcement has been steadfast in joining NRA in support of preserving the Tiahrt Amendment.  Both the BATFE and the Fraternal Order of Police (which Bloomberg called a “fringe organization”) strongly support keeping this sensitive data private.

Bloomberg, however, is undeterred and he is continuing to try to expand his anti-gun coalition.  In addition to the mayors of cities in Arkansas listed below, who are currently members of this coalition, Bloomberg is increasingly pressuring more mayors in your state to join his efforts, engaging in a full court press!

Mayors in Arkansas Who Are Current Members of Bloomberg’s “Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition”:

and this is in every state!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Mayor XXXXXX;

As a resident of CITY and your constituent, I strongly urge you to reconsider your decision to join Mayor Bloomberg’s anti-gun “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” coalition, and remove yourself as a member.

Mayor Bloomberg and his coalition allies have misrepresented themselves to the mayors of America and its citizens. This effort is simply another attempt to shift blame for violent crime from criminals to law-abiding gun owners.  This is gun control, not crime prevention.

Mr. Bloomberg’s tactics do not target illegal guns, but rather honest citizens and lawful dealers, essentially criminalizing all gun ownership. This coalition makes no distinction whatsoever between law-abiding gun owners and violent criminals.

Instead of being a part of a misguided coalition and advocating attacks against law-abiding gun owners, I ask you to direct your efforts towards strict enforcement of existing laws in our own city to ensure both our safety and civil rights.

Yanks Tiahrt Amendment From Appropriations Bill

Yanks Tiahrt Amendment From Appropriations Bill

Anti-gun Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Chairwoman of the Commerce,
Justice, Science (CJS) Appropriations Subcommittee, announced she will
not include the Tiahrt Amendment in the CJS appropriations bill.  In doing so,
Mikulski will defy the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
(BATFE) and the Fraternal Order of Police --supporters of the Amendment --
and instead chose to do the bidding of New York City Mayor Michael

Bloomberg (R).  While a temporary setback, that is not the final step in the Senate process.

Brady (Disinformation) Campaign Begins Against Parker v. D.C.

Parker v. D.C. may be headed for the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Brady
Campaign is worried.  In the case, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C.
Circuit declared that the right to arms is an individual right, not limited to
active-duty members of the militia, and that D.C.'s bans on handguns,
and on having guns assembled and loaded at home, violate the Second Amendment.

The announcement by D.C. city officials that they are considering
appealing to the Court has sent the Brady Campaign into panic mode.
Brady president, Paul Helmke, blurted out that "The D.C. law is an easy
one to shoot at.  Factually, it's a tougher one to get behind and defend.
Why is this the one we're going to be taking up to the Supremes?"

Congratulations! You have, once again, whupped the anti-gun zealots!

As Constitution-hating senators like California's Dianne Feinstein
whined and complained, the Senate -- by a narrow largely-party-line
vote of 55-43 -- struck language which would have required GOA to
monitor and report on its communications with its members and friends
(like you).

GOA has heard reports that there was an outpouring of calls against
this anti-speech language on Capitol Hill, and that it made a huge
difference.

In addition to the massive wave of grassroots opposition, GOA was
also working in concert with key Hill players (many of them trained
by GOA) to hammer out a legislative strategy that would either result
in the death of the entire bill or, at a minimum, kill the dangerous
Section 220.

The good news came late on Thursday night when the Bennett amendment
-- which deleted this unconstitutional "grassroots lobbying"
reporting language contained in S. 1 -- was adopted by the narrow
margin mentioned above.

The war is not over. The House has yet to produce its bill in this
area -- and no one is betting that the House will "do the right
thing." But we have won what perhaps will be the most important
battle.

The 43 Senators who voted to take us down the road of more government
regulation and more restrictions on the right of free speech -- a
road that would eventually make it harder for all of us to petition
our government servants -- are listed below:

Akaka (D-HI)
Biden (D-DE)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Brown (D-OH)
Byrd (D-WV)
Cantwell (D-WA)

Senate Takes Up Legislation To Stymie Grassroots Lobbying

Senate Takes Up Legislation To Stymie Grassroots Lobbying

When you look at GOA's year-ending report at
http://www.gunowners.org/a121406.htm, you can see that your
grassroots efforts had a tremendous impact upon the legislative
process last year.

There is no doubt that you guys have made a difference.

That's why GOA is so concerned about legislation currently pending on
the Senate floor which would attempt to intimidate organizations like
GOA that work with members and friends to pressure Congress to
support the Second Amendment.

The legislation (S. 1) would regulate "grassroots lobbying" by
requiring groups like us to monitor and report the amount of money we
spend to exercise our First Amendment rights on behalf of gun
ownership.

Suffice it to say that a government which can force us to monitor and
report on our "grassroots" activity could just as easily
force us to
provide even more sensitive details of these efforts.

This could include demands for our membership list -- that is,
attempts to get REGISTRATION lists of gun owners' names -- and the
specifics of communications with our friends!!!

Thankfully, there is an effort underway to knock out the most
egregious parts of this bill, found in Sec. 220. Senators Mitch
McConnell (R-KY) and Robert Bennett (R-UT) are offering an amendment
(Senate Amendment #20) -- to be voted on later this week -- that will
knock out the S. 1 restrictions on grassroots lobbying.

That's why we need your help right now.

The best way to keep from sliding down this slippery slope of
unconstitutionality is to tell the government -- now -- to keep its
nose out of our constitutional rights.

Just as the Second Amendment guarantees our right to keep and bear
arms, the First Amendment protects our rights to petition the
government for redress of grievances. And the power to regulate and
monitor our grassroots activities on behalf of gun ownership is,
ultimately, the power to destroy those rights.

ACTION: Contact your two Senators and ask them to support Senate
Amendment #20 to S. 1. You can visit the Gun Owners Legislative
Action Center at http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send your
Senators a pre-written e-mail message. And, you can call your
Senators toll-free at 1-877-762-8762.

---- Pre-written letter to your Senators ----

Dear Senator:

S. 1 is an effort to intimidate organizations, like Gun Owners of
America, that work with members and friends to encourage Congress to
support the Second Amendment. Thankfully, Senators McConnell and
Bennett are offering Senate Amendment #20 -- to be voted on later
this week -- that will knock Section 220 out of S. 1.

I urge you to support that amendment. And if the amendment is
defeated, then I would strongly urge you to oppose the underlying
bill. Gun Owners of America will be rating both of these votes.

Just as the Second Amendment guarantees our right to keep and bear
arms, the First Amendment protects our rights to petition the
government for redress of grievances. And the power to regulate and
monitor our grassroots activities on behalf of gun ownership is,
ultimately, the power to destroy those rights.

Please know that this is as much a Second Amendment issue as direct
efforts to seize our guns from our hands.

Sincerely,
